Ohai!
Jun 22nd
Hey everyone! Sorry I’ve been away for so long. This past winter my boyfriend and parents gave me the most wonderful Christmas present ever! They sent me out to California to a riding academy in which I learned so much and really had a great time. I spent about 6 months there. I am finally back home now and have a lot of plans for this summer.
I would like this summer, to really work on Confessh.us (considering it’s been about a year since I really worked on the code), as well as work on the design and back-end code of our movie rental application. I’ve already started porting the code into the new design (sucks we don’t really have a templating system). I’m also going to take a look at some of the PHP code to see if I can slim it down or optimize it in any way. The same goes for Confessh.us.
This summer I’ve also got a lot planned with the horses and with horse shows. We’re definitely trying to recognized!
I’m also going to try to whittle away at my video game list. I’ve got so many in there. I picked up Final Fantasy XIII the other day, but I do not see myself playing that game for many months. Heck I still haven’t completed FFX-2 haha. I really love it though. I’ve also got to get crackin’ on some Modern Warfare 2 stuff, if anyone is on LIVE, hit my up, ‘vtequine’ is my gamertag!
Anyways, I hope everyone is well. Keep checkin’ for new stuff!

A Girl Living In a Boys World
Nov 15th
First before I jump into anything, this post is simply meant to be silly. I don’t recommend following any of the advice or taking anything said too seriously.
Being a girl on the Internet has it’s up and downs. Everyone either wants to be your boyfriend or they want nothing to do with you. When people find out I’m a girl, I’ve either just made 50 new friends or 10 new enemies…I guess I should be more specific as to where on the Internet I speak of. I’m talking about the underground, not your MySpace, or your Facebook and Twitter, we’re talking about hidden away IRC channels, secret websites and forums, top sites and private game servers. By normal standards you’d never get into these places unless you’re able to hack the planet in your sleep or be able to provide the community with multiple 100mbit lines for various activities. However, being a girl changes everything…
I stepped into “the scene” around 2004, just when Windows Longhorn was coming around and people were all excited about it. It was also a pretty big time for the P2P scene and new networks and applications were growing exponentially. Broadband was becoming bigger and bigger and communities were really starting to take shape and build foundations to what they are today. I made hundreds of new friends, and of course a few enemies. Some of the guys just didn’t like seeing a girl who knew a few things about computers, for what reason I do not know. As a girl, and even to this day, you definitely have certain privileges that would never ever be given to anyone else.
At its peak, I had access to sites with the latest everything, I knew people in release groups like RAZOR1911, developers of the largest P2P networks, operators of the largest beta software channels and champions of DEFCON tournaments. I even dated a well known Microsoft Windows blogger for awhile. It was basically being like on top of the world. With a simple request you could pretty much get anything you wanted. The boys respected me for whatever computer skills I had and were more then willing to teach me more, and they were there to grant me wishes only one could dream of.
The boys seemed to be one of two types of people. Either you were to become their girlfriend instantly or they wanted nothing to do with you. I would say, 95% of the boys I’ve encountered were like this. However, they were a select few who wanted to be your honest to God friend. These people actually treated me like a someone, respected my thoughts and opinions and really were true friends. They didn’t care if I couldn’t memorize my name in binary or play the latest Half-Life game blindfolded, they just cared that I was interested in technology and shared a similar passion as them. Of course, there’s always creepy people on the Internet. At least on the Internet you’ve got the computer between yourself and them. I’ve certainly had my fair share, and being a girl, I found if you just ignore them, they’ll just come and go. They generally mean no harm, but some of them can be beyond ridiculous. It’s best just to put those ones on block!
Unfortunately over time even the select few boys who seemingly cared moved on. They wanted more out of me then I was able to provide. Something about a geeky girl really gets the guys. Romantically I wasn’t there for them, so they gave up and left. So much for just wanting to be friends…The few connections I had with some really great people were put on the shelf or ended all together. 99.999% of the boys I’ve met online have either lost interest either right away because I will not date them or if we actually manage to become and stay friends, they will tend to fall for me (and yes, I admittedly have fallen for a couple of them) and when I say I’d rather the friendship over the relationship, we stop communicating within a month if not less. As bad as this sounds, it’s something I’ve gotten used too, but whenever it happens, I feel horrible and tend to mope around for months on end. Being a girl on the Internet means you will come across the relationship factor no matter how hard you try to avoid it.
My life in the computer world is slowly coming to an end. I am currently going on my 6th year and it’s certainly showing. Long gone are my days where I can snap my fingers and have the latest DVDRiPs sitting in my inbox or be able to access the fastest servers. I have a feeling half of this is because of the way things have changed. People have grown up, the guys have real jobs and real lives now, and I certainly have my own as well. It’s been years since I’ve talked to some of the boys, we’ve just grown apart and moved on with our lives. This of course doesn’t mean I’ve forgotten anyone and I am certainly able to swing a few deals here and there (ones that still wouldn’t be as easy to close if I wasn’t a girl).
Being a girl on the Internet clearly has it perks whether you wish to recognize them or not. I will admit I have taken advantage of it a few times. It’s honestly hard not too, but you must never willingly do so. The boys will almost literally do anything for you, and you must respect them if they’re respectful of you. They’re no different then non-geeky people, they have normal feelings and needs/wants just like everyone else. I have always tried to be as respectful as possible and have always been thankful to the people who have taught me things or provided me with the tools and knowledge to learn more. If there’s one thing to understand if you’re a female in the boys territory, it’s to appreciate what lengths they will go to for you. I will never forget the people, the boys who have touched my life in one way or another. I will never forget late nights of gaming with the gang, or solving random code issues, or reading cyberpunk novels with friends, or trying out the latest beta software, or even just chatting about random technology tidbits on Skype for hours on end. Being a girl on the Internet is awesome…but the most important thing is just be who you are and appreciate the people who will do anything for you.
Xbox LIVE: Fall 2009 Preview
Oct 27th
After hearing about all the goodies like Twitter, Facebook and Last.FM integration within the Xbox 360 dashboard, I was quite excited. Of course my friend said, I was already on Twitter and Facebook enough as it was so he didn’t quite like how now I could also access both of them when using my Xbox! When these features where announced, I had expected them to released quite shortly thereafter. Of course they weren’t…one Xbox LIVE Preview came and went with no Twitter/Facebook. I was pretty disappointed that they could announce that and not even put the features in one of their betas. They even mentioned that it wouldn’t make it into the dashboard until December or so.
Finally just the other week, Major Nelson announced a new Xbox LIVE Preview and that it would include Twitter/Facebook features. Quite surprised and happy, I quickly signed up and a few days later I received an email letting me know I had been accepted! Been a semi-relatively busy girl, I wasn’t able to log in to LIVE and download the update until a few days later.

Well worth the wait though! I must say, I did have a bit of course finding the actual applications once I had installed the dashboard update. I could be completely wrong on this, but it looks like there’s a new “My Community” section which includes the Twitter and Facebook applications. In fact, I am not sure what to call them, is applications okay, or simply extra panels?

Anyways…the Twitter application is pretty straight forward, login with your Twitter username and password. One thing I didn’t like about this is it brings up that ugly Microsoft entry screen. Although I guess this is necessary for people who don’t have the chatpad or a keyboard connected to their Xbox. Once logged in you’ll see a timeline of your tweets along with your friends’ tweets. You can search through tweets and even show the trending topics. You can also see your @replies as well as Direct Messages. These are pretty much the features I look for in a decent twitter client, so I am pretty happy with the progress so far. As long as I can see my friends, @replies and Direct Messages, I am happy!

The Facebook application is also pretty well built. When you login you have the options to display your Xbox LIVE information on your Facebook as well as have the application automatically login. The Home panel basically is your news feed showing you latest status updates, your status, recent photos and your friends lists. The Facebook application is broken down into essentially 4 areas, Home, Profile, Friends and Photos.

The Profile area lets you review your profile and update your status if you’d like. You can also see any photos you’ve uploaded. In the Friends section you can browse through all your friends and even the friends lists you’ve created. Xbox even added a list which shows you your friends from Facebook who are also on Xbox LIVE. You can click into friends and view their photos and their profile information. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like you can write on their wall, leave comments on wall postings or like any status updates from here. You can however comment and like status updates from the News Feed on the Home panel. I’ll assume they’ll be building these features in so you can do it when viewing someone profile in the final update.

Overall, I am pretty impressed with the Facebook application. It definitely feels a bit odd navigating through Facebook via the panes, but once you understand where each item is and what you can do in each panel, it’s not so bad. I think it’s needs a bit more polishing, then I have a feeling it’ll be much better.

There was one more application added, which was Last.FM. However to be honest I didn’t really play around with it much since I am not a subscribed member of their service. This results in ads being shown every time I switched stations and such. You can pretty much listen to stations you’ve created, recommended ones and popular stations from the website. The application also supports scrobbling so it’ll report back to the Last.fm website with anything you’ve listened too. Minus the subscription issue, it’s a decent application.
So…new applications, awesome, right?! Yeah, pretty much! Biggest gripe…they don’t run in the background…so each time you want to access one you need to quit whatever you’re doing to access them. I think it’d be awesome to set up hot keys for both Twitter and Facebook. How awesome would it be to update your status while sniping someone in Call of Duty 4 with that amazing Barrett .50cal?! Of course you better be quick about your status updates. That’s definitely something Chris would fear and likely hate me for…updating my statuses while playing CoD4 rounds! :P It’d also be nice to have a radio station from Last.fm playing in the background while you’re gaming. I guess one can dream right?! Microsoft is definitely off to a great start with these new Xbox LIVE applications. If you haven’t been able to get into the latest Preview which includes these, I’m afraid you may need to wait until December when they’re rolled out for everyone. Don’t worry though it’ll come soon enough!
No M4 Carbine For Me!
Oct 8th
When I leveled up to prestige 4 in Call of Duty 4 my friend and I sort of made a bet or rather he challenged me that I could not use the M4 Carbine (pretty much the full auto version of the M16) for the entire 55 levels. I took this challenge and completed it. Not only did I not equip the M4 as a class but even when dropped by enemies I didn’t bother picking them up to use. I think what allowed me to do this was the fact that I still had access to another one of my favorite guns, the MP5. Small and quick! Anyways, here’s a couple pics to prove my awesomeness!

I still need to go through 6 more prestige levels and within the next month, seeing as how Modern Warfare 2 comes out then!
Resident Evil 5
Mar 15th

I’ve been a huge fan of Resident Evil ever since my friends Dad was playing Resident Evil 1 on his Playstation. I remember going over there and watching him as he walked into that first room where you find a mysterious creature that eerily turns it’s head only to find out it’s a zombie eating one of your squad members. That scene has stuck quite well in my mind for the past ten years.
And in those past ten years, Capcom has managed to crank out many more Resident Evil titles, all of which I’ve thoroughly enjoyed! On Friday (March 13, 2009) they released the 5th title in the series (although there are others, like Outbreak, Dead Aim, etc…) and although I didn’t make the midnight launch, I was there promptly on Friday after work let out. I also snagged the guide, mostly for the artwork and for some tips on where to find the emblems throughout the game.
I didn’t actually start playing until a bit later in the evening since I had to get some chores done and my friend who I planned to co-op through the game with was at some evening meetings. Finally around 10pm or so, we got together on Xbox LIVE and started it up!
During the last month or so we’ve been able to get our hands on the demo and I’ve heard lots of good things and bad things about the game. The biggest thing that came up was people didn’t like the controls at all. I personally had some issues getting used to the controls especially after playing the previous versions of the series. Normally when you go into your inventory the game will pause and you can combine, equip items and not have to worry about being attacked. In Resident Evil 5, this does not hold true, they seem to opt for a “hot key” inventory where you can switch between 1 of 4 items in your inventory. This caused me to get chopped in half a couple times when I was trying to either switch to a gun that had ammunition or pull out and use a medical item. After the first 30 minutes or so, I did get used to the control scheme. I advise people turn up the Aiming speed to either Fast or Fastest as it’ll greatly help. A few other control issues we had were when both teammates were required to complete an objective, mainly opening doors.

The game itself is rather well done, I would give it a 9.5/10. That said, I really felt like this was just another action game. It truly only felt like I was playing a Resident Evil game one out of the 10 or so hours I played it. The control style, the camera, the game environment/level design, the zombies all felt like something from an entirely different game.
The level designs are absolutely beautiful, vibrant and bright, which is exactly what Resident Evil is NOT! When I think of Resident Evil, I think of dark, gothic, and gloomy mansion where zombies are slowly crawling around. Resident Evil 5 has done almost the complete opposite. The zombies in this game seem a lot smarter and they sure are a lot faster then previous games. It feels like they’re really not zombies at all, but deranged and pissed off people.

They’re not as slow and dumb as zombies in previous Resident Evils which attributes to making it feels like it really is an entirely different game. I felt like Capcom shouldn’t have strayed this far from what they had built up in previous games. The game no longer feels like it’s apart of the survival horror genre which is Capcom’s bread and butter. It really just feels like another action game. For example, at one point in the game you encounter about 20-25 Lickers, and I felt like that really took away from how cool the Licker was. It was one badass, mutant animal, and was only rarely encountered and surely never in more then two or three at a time.
One of the few points throughout the game where you actually feel like you’re playing a Resident Evil game is when you’re on the boat. The level design is far darker then any of the other stages throughout the game and feels much more like you’re in ‘Resident Evil’ (if there is such a thing). Don’t get me wrong though, I really liked most of not all of the levels and their designs. You can tell a lot of thought was put into each and every area.
Character design (including Chris, Jill, Sheva, Wesker, Excella, bosses, Majini/zombies) was also very well done and impressed me. I believe in a video that came out around the time the demo did, the designers and producers were talking about how many revisions of Sheva they went through and finally after many of them, they all agreed on something. I also paged through the artwork in the player’s guide and in there they included some of the revisions of her. One of the designers mentioned getting so fed up that he threw a lot of the other revisions away! The boss designs were unique and very well done. The final version of Wesker was quite crazy! The attention to detail in the characters is something that really stood out too me, especially Chris and Sheva.
I really enjoyed the documents left around the level as they bring back some GREAT memories, and add to the plot. There were even a few tidbits in there that I either didn’t remember or were totally new too me. I managed to collect 10/12 ‘Files’ in the game, I think I remember the player’s guide mentioning something about the last 2 being pretty well hidden away, although I cannot remember what it says one must do in order to get them.

Another aspect of the game that is new to me (and possibly to the series) is the ability to upgrade your guns throughout the game. In previous Resident Evil games you just pick up a weapon and that’s it. In Resident Evil 5 when you pickup a gun, it’s added to the Store and you can also upgrade various aspects of the weapon. I stuck with the default pistol and the H&K MP5 as my main weapons, but I did manage to snag an AK-47, RPG, and the Jail Breaker (a shotgun). Aspects you can upgrade include ammunition capacity, piercing strength, reload speeds, and more! Each upgrade costs money which brings me to my next point.
In Resident Evil 5, you can collect gold throughout the levels. This gold is in turn used to purchase weapons and items from the store, or to upgrade your weapon. I believe this is the first Resident Evil game to use this method, and I actually like it. Also throughout the levels are “treasures” which can be sold for gold. The ability to upgrade your weapons, adds a bit of the RPG genre and I for one welcome it.
You can also use points you get by completing chapters to purchase figurines. What purpose the figurines provide is beyond me, I guess just collecting them is the cool thing to do. I have yet to purchase any, but when I do, I’ll let y’all know! :)

One thing my friend and I both commented on was how well done the soundtrack to this game is, and we’re both planning on getting (when and if it comes out). That said, this pretty much wraps up my thoughts about the game. I am very impressed with it, although I do think a few things could have been done differently. Here’s to hoping Capcom reverts back to their older style and takes Resident Evil 6 back into a true survival horror game.
Gears of War 2: Horde Mode
Mar 1st
Believe it or not, I’ve never played multiplayer in Gears of War 2. Yes, I’ve done the campaign mode in co-op, but for all intensive purposes, I’ll separate multiplayer and co-op as different.
Last night, that all changed though. My good friend and I found some time and tried out horde mode together. Horde mode essentially pits you and up to 4 other players against waves of the horde. There are 50 “waves” in all, and after every 10 levels, the horde will get tougher and tougher. They will increase in health, strength and have a more accurate shot.
Fortunately there are tons of weapons and ammo throughout the maps. You can also pickup weapons from the fallen enemies. After completing a wave, the ammo in some weapons will automatically refresh along with the ammo boxes throughout the map.
Should you die during the round, you’ll be allowed to view the other members on your team and you can also take photos. Unfortunately it looks like Epic Games is making some changes to the photo system so I cannot show you some of my beautiful photography skills! That said, if all members on your team die it’s game over!
Last night, I managed to get to the 16th round before all members of my team died. Almost made it halfway through Horde mode. I have a feeling that won’t be the last time I play it though. It’s really fun, pure shoot em’ up action! It’s definitely the way to go if you’re looking for some quick crazy action! It definitely doesn’t hurt to employ some strategy though. I can only imagine how difficult some of the levels get!
Anyone out there reach level 50, or even better complete horde mode?
Hello World!
Feb 9th
I told myself that I would get this blog post out today, so here it is. I’ve just started this brand new blog, as maybe a continuation of TeHGeekGirl, or maybe it’ll be a fresh start. Either way you look at it, I’m very excited about it. I’m joining my two very good friends, and together we’ll all be publishing some really great things. Usually just random musings about day to day life, but I have a feeling it’ll all be worthy content :)
Last night I was talking to Jenny and she asked me how long I had been blogging for. I replied with, five years. Seriously, five years?! I found it just as hard to believe as she did. So here’s to another wonderful five years!
That said, I’m going to finish this episode of Dirty Jobs, and I’ll start working on my first real post!
